BOSTON — The Student Government Association (SGA) and the Career Development Center announce a joint initiative to gain a non-tuition academic credit for an internship. During the 2022-2023 academic year, Emerson students with internship offers are eligible to apply for the PDE 100 (Professional Development Experience) and obtain one academic credit for free. This opportunity strives to reduce any financial obstacles to performing a learning experience.
Emerson College allows students to gain practical involvement in the professional field while earning credential completion from the institution. The non-tuition program has four collective non-tuition credits. The PDE is one free course and is not included in that four total credits. If a student has already done four non-tuition credits, they are still eligible to gain that one free PDE 100 course.
As part of SGA’s mission of creating robust conversations with different departments around campus, SGA president Pranit Chand, along with the Director of Career Services, Carol Spector, endeavors through dialogue to increase access to one academic credit.
“I believe this would open up various opportunities for students from all levels/classes at Emerson. They won’t have to worry about paying for additional costs, especially when they are doing an unpaid internship,” said Pranit Chand, SGA president. “As an international student, this is also helpful for me and all Emersonians because it will not hinder our career progressions.”
Credit-bearing internships impact low-income students who are disadvantaged by unpaid internships and international students who are required to receive a credit to work in the United States. The Career Development Center provides services that focus on creating plans for those who are struggling. SGA’s goal is to represent student voices and fight for those in need.
The Student Government Association (SGA) at Emerson College is the representative body for the undergraduate population, dedicated to the protection and promotion of student interests. The organization seeks to facilitate the operation of and fund college-recognized organizations and strives to create and maintain robust dialogues between students, staff, administration, and faculty in order to ensure students get the best Emerson experience.
